New to Sailing?

Whether you’re learning to sail, joining a crew, or supporting a young sailor, South of Perth Yacht Club (SoPYC) offers a welcoming pathway into sailing, racing, training, and volunteering.

Explore the resources below to help you get started both on and off the water.

Before You Get on the Water

Learning the Lingo

Sailing has its own language, but don’t worry, everyone starts somewhere. Coaches, instructors, skippers, and experienced sailors are always happy to explain unfamiliar terms.

What to Wear

No specialist sailing gear is needed to get started.

General Tips

  • Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a water bottle.
  • Comfortable clothes suitable for the weather.
  • Closed-toe, non-slip footwear.
  • Bring a windproof or waterproof jacket.
Life Jackets

Life jackets are mandatory for many sailing activities and are strongly recommended for all participants. SoPYC provides loan life jackets for Club programs and courses.

In a Keelboat
  • Dress in layers.
  • Be prepared for spray and cooler conditions on the water.
  • Wear comfortable, non-marking shoes.
In a Dinghy
  • Expect to get wet.
  • Wetsuits or quick-drying clothing are recommended.
  • Barefoot or lightweight water shoes are common.
Other Tips & Tricks
  • Leave valuables ashore where possible.
  • Use Club facilities before heading on the water.
  • Always hold on when moving around a boat.
  • Keep clear of ropes, winches, and moving equipment.
  • Watch the boom and stay low when instructed.
  • Inform your coach or skipper of any medical conditions or injuries.
  • Ask questions and enjoy the experience.

How often should sailors train?
